Abstract

Asymmetric cell division is a powerful mechanism that generates cell diversity. It is used by stem cells to maintain the stem cell pool and produce cells that differentiate. Defects in cell polarity can lead to developmental problems and diseases. Using budding yeast, we have discovered new epigenetic elements, termed mnemons, that are inherited asymmetrically during cell division. The mnemon Whi3 is a prion-like protein that binds and regulate mRNAs. The cell uses Whi3 conformational and functional switch as a cell fate determinant and a molecular memory. Our work will determine the link between mRNA control and mnemon change of conformation.
