Does intensification of poultry production impact on Campylobacter evolution, microbiome variation and the risk of antimicrobial resistance?

Abstract

The global burden of the foodborne disease Campylobacteriosis is substantial, with the greatest risks linked to chicken meat. Chicken is the most popular global source of animal protein, but intensification of production has relied on the overuse of antibiotics, creating conditions for generation and dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria threatening human health. We will work alongside the GCRF One Health Poultry Hub using Campylobacter isolates collected from four LMIC countries with complementary microbiome, metagenomics and antimicrobial residues data to investigate the effect of intensification on bacterial occurrence and evolution, the genetic drivers of virulence and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.
