Abstract

Platforms with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are highly effective when incorporated into artificial cell scaffolds, due to responsiveness towards external stimuli, such as heat and magnetism. However, the inability to successfully mimic the dynamic nature of the extracellular matrix has led to the failure of such scaffolds, in vitro. We propose the development of a novel 3D scaffold for soft tissue cells, which can be actuated with an external magnet. The magnetically-actuated movement is hypothesised to increase cell viability under dynamic conditions, and could lead to the development of superior scaffolds at low cost with facile synthesis routes.
